Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coordinator: Good morning. Thanks for coming. We have a community outreach on Saturday at nine a.m. Volunteer: Morning. Is this the astronomy and bake-sale event? Coordinator: Yes. There will be an astronomy talk about the ecliptic and a bake sale using a convection oven. Volunteer: Will the organisers offer any pay? I mean, is there remuneration? Coordinator: We don't pay a wage. But we give a small remuneration to cover travel or snack costs. Volunteer: So the remuneration will cover train fare? That would help with my commute. Coordinator: Yes, it can cover train fare. Also, in the astronomy talk we will draw the ecliptic on the sky chart. Volunteer: I could help set up the convection oven. I used one last year for a charity sale. Coordinator: Great. We will also demonstrate convection currents in a simple sun model during the talk. Volunteer: Is there an online training before the event? Coordinator: Yes. It's Tuesday evening. Note that video calls sometimes suffer latency, so the trainer may record the session. Volunteer: If latency causes problems, will they repeat the information? Coordinator: They will upload the recording. If the meeting runs out of time, we may adjourn and finish preparation on Friday. Volunteer: And after the event, when will the final meeting adjourn? Coordinator: We expect to adjourn by five p.m. and send expense forms for remuneration soon after.
