Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Dispatcher: Good afternoon. Emergency dispatch. This is Anna. How can I help you? Security Guard: Hi Anna. I'm Mark, a security guard here at Riverside Park. I'm at the east gate. Security Guard: Sorry, correction, the man is actually by the main fountain, not the gate. Dispatcher: Okay, thank you. Please stay on the line. Is he conscious? Security Guard: He's breathing but very confused. He's sitting on a bench, alone, in clear solitude. Security Guard: He even told me earlier that he prefers solitude most days. Dispatcher: Do you see any hazards nearby? Is there a fragment of glass or anything sharp? Security Guard: Yes. There's a fragment of glass near his right hand, and a few small fragments of wood nearby. Dispatcher: Right. Don't move him. Moving him could undermine his safety and make any injuries worse. Security Guard: Understood. I have my badge on me if officers need to identify me. Dispatcher: When the police arrive they may ask to see your badge. Try not to exaggerate when you describe how he looks. Security Guard: I won't exaggerate. I'm trying to be accurate. Earlier I said it was near the gate, but it's definitely the fountain. Dispatcher: Good. Keep him still and talk to him gently. Don't give him anything to drink. Don't let your actions undermine his condition. Dispatcher: An ambulance is on its way. The crew should be there in about 10 minutes. Stay with him until help arrives.
