Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Sales Assistant: Hello. Good afternoon. How can I help you today? Customer: Hi. I want to return this small bottle of hand sanitiser. I bought it yesterday. Sales Assistant: I am sorry. What is wrong with it? Customer: It smells wrong. I think it has methanol in it. My skin reacted. Sales Assistant: That sounds serious. A rash can be a clear manifestation of a chemical reaction. Customer: Yes. The red rash is a visible manifestation. I live in the commune next to the market and I will take the bottle to the commune health centre. Sales Assistant: Thank you for telling us. We can offer a full refund now. We will not give you a measly coupon instead. Customer: I appreciate that. I paid with my card. Please also check the product for methanol. Sales Assistant: We will test the bottle and report the issue. We must reprehend the supplier if the test shows methanol. Customer: I don't want anyone to be blamed unfairly. I would not reprehend the cashier. I just want safety. Sales Assistant: Of course. We agree. The measly price of the bottle cannot justify a safety problem. This return is a clear sign of a bigger problem. Customer: Thank you. I will go to the commune health centre and keep the receipt. I will wait for your call about the test.
