Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Interviewer: Good morning. Thank you for coming in. How was the journey here? Candidate: Good morning. It was fine, thank you. Traffic was light so I arrived early. Interviewer: Great. Let me explain the role briefly. It's a full-time marketing assistant position, initially three months as a trial. Candidate: That sounds reasonable. I should say up front I'm proficient with Internet tools and online campaigns. Interviewer: Excellent. Can you give an example of a project you ran on the Internet? Candidate: Sure. Last year I managed a social media and web campaign that raised our newsletter sign-ups by 40 percent. I used Internet analytics daily. Interviewer: Do you prefer working in the office or remotely? Candidate: I prefer the office for team collaboration, but I can work remotely when the Internet connection is reliable. Interviewer: Good to know. When could you start if we offered you the job? Candidate: I have a two-week notice period, so I could start in mid-October. I could also start sooner if my current employer waives the notice. Interviewer: Thanks. Finally, what's your salary expectation? Candidate: I'm looking for about 28,000 per year, but I'm flexible depending on benefits and training. Interviewer: That helps. We'll be in touch next week and may ask for references and ID verification.
