Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Waiter: Good evening. Welcome. Table for one or two? Customer: Just one. Thanks. Actually, I think I found an eyelash in my salad a moment ago. Waiter: Oh, I'm sorry about that. We can replace the salad right away or offer a small discount. Customer: It's fine, I'll keep it. That eyelash might have come from my scarf anyway. Waiter: All right. Are you ready to order? We have a starter duo of bruschetta and olives today. Customer: No starter, thanks. For the main, I'll have the grilled salmon with new potatoes and a side salad. Waiter: Good choice. The new potatoes nestle under the salmon, so they taste quite nice together. Customer: By the way, is the 'l' in 'salmon' a consonant? I always wondered about that sound. Waiter: Yes, the 'l' is a consonant, but it's silent in 'salmon'. Many people miss that detail. Customer: I heard a little whimper from the corner a few minutes ago. Is there a baby in the next area? Waiter: Yes, I heard the same soft whimper earlier. The baby seemed sleepy, not upset. Waiter: Would you like a dessert? We do a dessert duo of cheesecake and ice cream if you'd like to share later. Customer: No dessert now, thanks. Could you leave a lemon wedge to nestle beside the salad, please? Waiter: Certainly. I'll get your salad fixed and the salmon will be out soon. Again, sorry about the eyelash.
