Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: Hello, Mr Carter. This is Ms Lopez from Oakwood Primary. Mr. Carter, Parent: Hi, Ms Lopez. Is everything all right? Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: There was a small incident on the playground around 2:15. Mr. Carter, Parent: Oh dear. Is Emma okay? Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: She was picked up by the nurse and checked, but she has a sprained ankle. Mr. Carter, Parent: A sprained ankle? That sounds painful. Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: Yes. It was the only casualty, thankfully minor, and no other child was hurt. Mr. Carter, Parent: So I should come now to pick her up? Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: Yes please. You can pick her up at reception in about ten minutes. Mr. Carter, Parent: Right. Do you need any information from me? Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: No, just your ID. The art project she was working on remains on her desk. Mr. Carter, Parent: Good to know. Will the teacher remain with the class? Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: I will remain in class until the others are collected. Mr. Carter, Parent: Thank you. And the casualty was only a sprain, not a fracture? Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: Correct. The nurse confirmed it's a sprain. Emma remains calm, but a little shaken. Mr. Carter, Parent: Okay. I'll be there in ten minutes to pick her up and collect the project remains too. Ms. Lopez, Class Teacher: Perfect. See you shortly.
