Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coach: Hi, good evening. This is Sam, the coach for the outdoor fitness group. Participant: Hello Sam. I enjoyed the last session. I wanted to check tomorrow's plan. Coach: Great. We will meet at the small pond at 6:30 pm. Participant: 6:30 is fine. Will we train by the lamplight near the path? Coach: Yes, we'll use the lamplight because it will be getting dark. Participant: I remember last week there were tiny polliwogs at that pond. Coach: That's right. I saw a polliwog close to the edge too. They were small and quick. Participant: Where exactly by the pond should we meet? Near the bench or the stump? Coach: Meet by the old tree stump beside the water. The stump is easy to spot. Participant: Okay. I'll bring water and comfortable shoes. I can bring a torch if the lamplight is weak. Coach: Good idea. That stump will be our starting point. The lamplight usually helps, but a torch is handy. Participant: Perfect. I like the outdoor sessions. The polliwogs, the quiet pond and the lamplight make it fun. Coach: Nice. See you at 6:30 by the stump. Bring water and your shoes, and the torch if you want.
