Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Insurance Agent: Good morning. I see you want travel insurance for your weekend trip? Traveler: Yes. With this weather I might need extra cover. I heard staff sometimes have to clear away snow from the access road. Insurance Agent: That can cause delays. Our policy covers travel delay caused by road crews who clear away snow or debris. Traveler: Right. Also, if I buy now I want to make a donation to the company charity. Do you let customers make a donation at checkout? Insurance Agent: Yes, you can make a donation when you pay. The sum goes to our emergency relief fund. Traveler: Good. One minor thing: if I lose small items, like a mechanical pencil I use for sketches, is that claimable? Insurance Agent: Small stationery, such as a mechanical pencil, is covered only up to a modest limit under baggage delay benefits. Traveler: So a mechanical pencil would probably be below the excess. I might not bother claiming such a tiny item. Insurance Agent: Exactly. Claims for small items are often not worth pursuing. If you need help during the trip our 24-hour helpline is available, though refunds may take up to six weeks. Traveler: I see. If the flight is cancelled because crews are clearing away a fallen tree, would you assist right away? Insurance Agent: Yes. We can help with rebooking and guide you on whether to make a donation to local relief if you prefer supporting affected communities.
