Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Anna Lee (Interviewer): Good morning. I'm Anna Lee, the hiring manager. Welcome to our office. Mark Chen (Candidate): Good morning, Anna. Thanks for inviting me. I'm Mark Chen. Anna Lee (Interviewer): How was your commute? Mark Chen (Candidate): It was fine. A bit of traffic, but nothing major. Anna Lee (Interviewer): We're interviewing for a packaging engineer. Do you want tea or coffee? Mark Chen (Candidate): Coffee, please. I applied for the packaging engineer role because of my background. Mark Chen (Candidate): I used to work at a small food-packaging startup. I led quality testing and supplier meetings. Mark Chen (Candidate): We developed a lid that creates a super airtight seal to seal in freshness for up to two weeks. Anna Lee (Interviewer): That's super impressive. What kinds of tests did you run? Mark Chen (Candidate): We ran humidity tests, drop tests and temperature cycling. Records were kept for every batch. Anna Lee (Interviewer): Here, we prioritise tests that show a product can seal in freshness across varied temperatures. Mark Chen (Candidate): In one project we reduced waste by eight percent and improved line speed by redesigning the cap. Anna Lee (Interviewer): Our team is mostly remote, but we ask staff to come into the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mark Chen (Candidate): I prefer some office time. I find face-to-face checks are super useful for testing. Anna Lee (Interviewer): Good. Could you start in June if we offer you the job? Mark Chen (Candidate): Yes, June works. I'm flexible about hours and willing to travel to supplier sites. Anna Lee (Interviewer): Excellent. We'll contact you next week with our decision. Thank you for coming in. Mark Chen (Candidate): Thank you, Anna. I look forward to hearing from you.
