Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Shop Assistant: Good morning. How can I help you today? Customer: Hi. I need to return a few things I bought last week. Shop Assistant: Okay. What items are those? Customer: A yogurt that was off, a small nailbrush with loose bristles, and a supplement I bought for smokers. Shop Assistant: I see. Sorry about the yogurt. Did you keep the yogurt in the fridge? Customer: Yes, I refrigerated the yogurt. It smelled bad when I opened it this morning. Shop Assistant: That's not good. And the nailbrush, you said the bristles came out? Customer: Exactly. The nailbrush bristles fall out after one use. Shop Assistant: About the supplement, it was labelled for smokers trying to quit, right? Customer: Yes. I'm a smoker and I bought the supplement hoping it would help. It didn't give any relief. Shop Assistant: I'm sorry it didn't help. If you have the receipt we can do a refund. Our usual policy is 14 days, but sometimes we accept returns within 30 days with a receipt. Customer: I have the receipt. It shows I bought everything last week on Monday. Shop Assistant: The receipt here shows purchase on Tuesday, but that's fine. Since you kept the yogurt cold and the nailbrush bristles are defective, I can refund you. Customer: Oh, great. That's a relief. I was worried it would take a long time. Shop Assistant: No problem. I'm glad we could help. It's good you tried the supplement for smokers, but we'll refund it and you can choose another product if it gives no relief.
