Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Hannah (Housing Agent): Hello, welcome to Maple Rentals. I'm Hannah at the housing office. It's a blissful morning, isn't it? How can I help? Tom (Prospective Tenant): Hi Hannah, I'm Tom. I saw the ad for the one‑bed flat on Elm Street. I think it would be blissful to have the balcony. Hannah (Housing Agent): Yes, it's lovely. The flat is on the third floor near the extremity of the block, so it's quiet. Tom (Prospective Tenant): Quiet sounds great. How much is the rent? Hannah (Housing Agent): The listing says $900 per month with parking included. Tom (Prospective Tenant): I read elsewhere that utilities are included. Is that true? Hannah (Housing Agent): Utilities are included except electricity and internet. Sorry if that exasperates you. Tom (Prospective Tenant): That is a bit annoying, but manageable. What paperwork do you need? Hannah (Housing Agent): I'll need to collate your ID, two references and a recent pay slip. Tom (Prospective Tenant): Do you allow pets? My cat is calm. Hannah (Housing Agent): We usually say no, though the landlord jokingly calls himself a benevolent overlord and sometimes makes exceptions. Tom (Prospective Tenant): Good to know. Any parking restrictions? Hannah (Housing Agent): Street parking only at the extremity of the property. Don't expect assigned spaces; that detail sometimes exasperates tenants. Tom (Prospective Tenant): Understood. How long is the lease? Hannah (Housing Agent): Standard one year. We'll collate the signed lease with the inventory sheet and give you the keys. Tom (Prospective Tenant): Great. I like the idea. The balcony view would be blissful for morning coffee. Hannah (Housing Agent): Perfect. The landlord, our so‑called overlord, will meet you if you decide to move in.
