Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coordinator: Good morning. Thanks for coming in early. Volunteer: Morning. No problem. How can I help today? Coordinator: We meet at the community hall by the library at nine. Volunteer: Nine is fine. What are the main jobs? Coordinator: First, we need to clear out the back storeroom. It is full of old chairs and boxes. Volunteer: Okay. I can help sort donations and carry boxes. Coordinator: Great. Someone must take mop duty for the hall afterwards. Volunteer: I will take mop duty this week. I don't mind wet floors. Coordinator: Thanks. Mop duty rotates each week, but you can swap if needed. Volunteer: Perfect. Will we also clear out the old toys? Coordinator: Yes. We will sort toys and decide what to keep. Coordinator: There will be a children activity at two. When the mascot appears, kids will let out a roar. Volunteer: I remember last time they let out a roar when the puppet show began. It was loud. Coordinator: So we clear out rubbish, tidy shelves, and finish by lunch if possible. Volunteer: Sounds good. If I take mop duty, I will mop the hall floor after lunch. Coordinator: Perfect. With everyone helping we should finish early and the kids will probably let out a roar of excitement.
