Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Insurance Agent: Good morning. This is Global Travel Insurance. How can I help? Policyholder: Hi, I need to report a small accident. My backpack got a singe from a stove while I was in a hostel. Insurance Agent: I am sorry to hear that. We do accept accidental damage claims. Could you describe the singe and when it happened? Policyholder: It was a tiny singe on the strap yesterday. I made profuse notes and took photos right away. Insurance Agent: Good. We need profuse documentation for any damage claim. Photos, receipts, and a short statement help us. Policyholder: One thing worries me. I saw an agent online offering to handle claims for a fee. Is that legit? Insurance Agent: Be careful. There are bogus intermediaries out there. A bogus agent might ask for payment and do nothing. Policyholder: Right. I will avoid anyone bogus. Also, I listed my kinsfolk as emergency contacts on the form. Insurance Agent: That is useful. If you are unable to travel, your kinsfolk can act for you. We sometimes contact kinsfolk for confirmation. Policyholder: How long does it take to conclude a claim? Insurance Agent: Typically we conclude straightforward claims in ten working days. Complex cases may take longer. Policyholder: And does the policy cover replacement of a burnt passport? Insurance Agent: We cover some emergency travel costs, but replacement passport fees are usually excluded in standard cover. To conclude, check the exclusions page. Policyholder: Thanks. I will upload the photos and the receipts. I also want to avoid profuse back-and-forth if possible. Insurance Agent: Perfect. If anything else comes up, call us. We do get occasional bogus calls claiming to be us, so always verify the number.
