Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Emma (Manager): Morning, James. Good to see you. How's your day going? James (IT Specialist): Busy morning, Emma. I need to book an appointment with HR to discuss the new access policy. Emma (Manager): Right. We had the rollout meeting tentatively set for Thursday at 2 p.m. in Conference Room B. James (IT Specialist): I was hoping for an afternoon slot on Friday, around 3 p.m. The IT team has training Thursday morning. Emma (Manager): We can offer 2:30 as a compromise if Friday isn't feasible. The HR representative, Sara, is only free Thursday morning or Friday afternoon. James (IT Specialist): Then Friday at 3 would work best. Also, could we make the appointment 45 minutes? That should give us time to run through the checklist. Emma (Manager): Forty-five minutes sounds reasonable. I'll confirm the appointment and send a calendar invite as soon as I book the room. James (IT Specialist): Great. Should I prepare the access list and bring two devices? Emma (Manager): Bring the list and at least one laptop. We won't need two tablets for this meeting. James (IT Specialist): Perfect. I'll prepare the materials and wait for the invite. Emma (Manager): I'll book Conference Room C, because B is used for interviews that afternoon. Expect the invite by noon.
