Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Ticket Attendant: A (Ticket Attendant): Good morning. Where are you heading today? Passenger: B (Passenger): Morning. I need a single to Oakford, please. I plan to take the hybrid bus on route 12. Ticket Attendant: A (Ticket Attendant): Right. The hybrid bus for Oakford leaves from platform 3 at 9:20. It can be faster in heavy traffic. Passenger: B (Passenger): 9:20 from platform 3, got it. How much is a single? Ticket Attendant: A (Ticket Attendant): The single fare is £2.50. You can pay contactless or with cash. The hybrid vehicles are quieter too, since they use electric and diesel. Passenger: B (Passenger): Great. I prefer hybrid buses. Earlier trains were delayed, so I hope this one is on time. Ticket Attendant: A (Ticket Attendant): We had some delays earlier, but the bus looks clear. Please board at the front door and tap as you enter. Passenger: B (Passenger): I will. And I won't gloat if someone misses it. No need to gloat about empty seats. Ticket Attendant: A (Ticket Attendant): Thank you. It's better not to gloat. Have a safe trip on the hybrid bus and enjoy Oakford.
