Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Check-in Agent: Good afternoon. Welcome to Terminal 2. I hope you are having a pleasant day so far. Passenger: Good afternoon. It has been pleasant. I flew in early and grabbed a kipper sandwich at the café. Check-in Agent: A kipper? That sounds traditional. Please note strong-smelling food can sometimes be inspected at security. Passenger: I understand. I packed it in my carry-on and tried to wrap it, but I was worried it might smell similar to smoked fish in the cabin. Check-in Agent: Right. Let me check your passport and ticket. Your flight to Edinburgh is scheduled at 17:30 from Gate B22. Passenger: Thanks. Could you inscribe my name on this fragile sticker? I want it on the tag for the guitar case. Check-in Agent: Sure, I'll inscribe the name clearly. Also, I see some muck on the wheel of that case. Passenger: Oh yes, I walked across a muddy path this morning and got some muck on it. Check-in Agent: Could you wipe off the muck before we put it on the belt? We try to keep the conveyors clean. Passenger: No problem. I will wipe it. The case is similar in size to a medium suitcase if that helps. Check-in Agent: That helps. Everything looks fine now. Have a pleasant flight and enjoy your visit. Passenger: Thank you. I usually inscribe the date inside the case too, and I appreciate your help.
