Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coach: Hello, I'm Coach Maria. Welcome to the community gym. Member: Hi, I'm Tom. I signed up for the 6 PM sports and fitness class. Coach: Good. It's a busy evening. Please check in at the desk. Member: Thanks. I am a bit nervous. I hope I do okay. Coach: No problem. Be levelheaded. Take one step at a time. Member: You seem levelheaded. That helps me calm down. Coach: Before the main work we do a warm-up. A warm-up should antecede stretching. Member: So warm-up first, then stretch. Got it. Coach: Yes. Instructions often antecede heavy lifts too. Coach: Look at the screen. A raised heartbeat is an indicant of hard effort. Member: We check the heart monitor? I can see an indicant on the small display. Coach: Exactly. I watch the indicant to keep you safe. Coach: The small weight plates are interchangeable. You can change plates by hand. Member: Are kettlebells interchangeable too? Coach: No, kettlebells are not interchangeable. Only the small plates fit here. Coach: Do not goldbrick during class. If you goldbrick, you miss progress. Member: I will try not to goldbrick. I want to learn. Coach: Good. Be on time. Today's class starts at 6 PM. Coach: Oh, by the way, I sometimes bring snacks and I wear a blue watch. Member: Snacks sound nice. I will sign the form now.
