Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Officer: Good morning. This is Officer Lane from the emergency response team. Medics Dispatcher: Hi Officer Lane! We received a report about a theft in the jewelry store downtown. Officer: Right, I heard about that. The shop owner mentioned that some valuable items were taken, maybe a necklace, and some ragged pieces as well. Medics Dispatcher: That's correct. The shop owner said they need to assess the loss. They want a fair rate for the stolen items. Officer: Understood. How did the thief enter the store? Medics Dispatcher: The video footage shows a man in a tall hat and a tailor-made coat. It's disturbing how quickly he got away. Officer: I see. It should be easier to catch him with those details. Did the store owner mention if they felt comfortable enough with their security? Medics Dispatcher: Yes, they thought they had a prosperous system in place, but clearly, it was inadequate. Officer: I’ll send a team to check the area and gather more evidence. Medics Dispatcher: Great! Let’s hope they find something useful.
