Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

I want to tell you about our town's Harvest Lantern Festival. It is held each October in the town centre. The festival lasts three days, from Friday to Sunday. The highlight is the main parade on Saturday afternoon. There is also a river boat parade in the evening. A craft market occupies the main square and is open all weekend. In addition, a pop-up market will be available nearby and stays open for a whole week. Local food stalls sell traditional dishes. Some vegetarian options are available too. Free guided tours are available every morning during the festival. If you prefer to travel by public transport, free shuttles run from the train station. Parking in the centre is limited, so buses are recommended. Tickets are available online, and a small kiosk at the entrance sells printed tickets as well. Information leaflets will be available at the tourism office and on the festival website. The finale is a fireworks display on Sunday at around 9 pm. There is a nominal fee for some specialist workshops, but most events are free to join. Remember to check the schedule online because some events move indoors if it rains.
