Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coordinator: Hi Tom. Thanks for coming. Good to see you interested in volunteering. Tom: Thanks. I signed up online. What should I expect on Sunday? Coordinator: We'll depart from the community hall at nine a.m. sharp. Please be on time. Tom: Nine a.m. is fine. How many people are going? Coordinator: About ten volunteers on the list, though twelve signed up through the app. That number might change. Tom: What tasks will I do? Coordinator: You'll help with the marine team first. An injured dolphin needs feeding and basic care before a vet drive. Tom: A dolphin! I didn't know we'd work with dolphins. Coordinator: Yes. If we depart early we can feed the dolphin and wash the rescue equipment. Tom: And after the marine work? Coordinator: We'll join a community garden project. The bee team will teach volunteers to handle hives safely. Tom: I've never been near a bee hive. Is that safe? Coordinator: Yes. The trainer explains protective gear. The bee session is short. You can observe if you prefer. Tom: Good. Any other duties? Coordinator: We're also collecting baby cribs for the shelter. One person will load each crib into the van. Tom: So I might carry a crib? Coordinator: Possibly. We need volunteers who can lift. We'll not compete with the rival group that planned a beach sweep later. Tom: A rival group? Will that cause problems? Coordinator: Not usually. The rival organisation often works nearby but on a different route. We coordinate to avoid overlap. Tom: Great. I can help with the dolphin, try the bee workshop, and maybe lift a crib. Coordinator: Perfect. Remember: depart at nine. Bring gloves. If the dolphin is moved to the clinic, our shift ends earlier.
