Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coach: Hi, good morning. How are you today? Member: I'm fine, thanks. Ready for training after work. Coach: Great. By the way, water bottles are ubiquitous here. Everyone has one. Member: Yes, bottles and phones are ubiquitous too. They are everywhere in the gym. Coach: Did you hear about the small narcotic case near the sports hall yesterday? Member: I did. The paper said the police found a packet that looked like a narcotic. Coach: They also said there might be an accomplice who helped hide it. Member: Right. Later they mentioned a second accomplice was seen leaving early. Coach: On a lighter note, the coach made a saucy joke about our new drills. Member: I heard that. There was also a saucy ad for a spicy protein sauce near the door. Coach: About the match, we signed up for an inter-school friendly next month. Member: Good. I wrote 'inter' on the form because the coach said inter means inter-club games. Coach: Remember practice time: it's moved to Tuesday at 6 a.m. Member: I thought the schedule said Wednesday at 6 a.m. Which is it? Coach: Sorry, I may have caused confusion. The inter-gym coach told me Tuesday, but check the board. Member: I will check. Also, the police report said the narcotic was in a locker near the east entrance. Coach: Yes, and they think the accomplice used the changing room exit. Member: Okay. I'll bring my bottle. Ubiquitous bottles make it easy to stay hydrated.
