Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Agent: Hello, I'm the agent for this flat. Nice to meet you. Would you like a quick tour first? Prospective Tenant: Hi, yes please. I read a short parable about moving that made me think carefully about neighbourhoods. Agent: Good point. I sometimes tell a parable to new tenants to explain why rules exist. Prospective Tenant: About rules, I hope you won't obfuscate any costs. I need clear numbers. Agent: Of course. I won't obfuscate the fees. Rent is 700 a month and due on the 5th. Prospective Tenant: You mentioned a deposit earlier. I want to digest that information before I sign. Agent: The deposit is 700 as well. Sorry, let me correct the rent date — it's actually due on the 15th, not the 5th. Prospective Tenant: Thanks. I need time to digest the lease. Also, I worry a bit about anomie in a new area. Agent: I understand. Some neighbours felt anomie at first, but the building has a noticeboard to help people connect. Prospective Tenant: That helps. One more thing: is there any rule that would feel like an epitaph for small gatherings? I don't want events banned completely. Agent: No, we don't want to write an epitaph for social life. We only ask tenants to be respectful and not make loud parties. Prospective Tenant: Okay. Please don't obfuscate about parking either. I read a digest from another building and it was confusing. Agent: I won't obfuscate parking rules. And if you like, I'll give a one-page digest of all key points after you view the flat.
