Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Volunteer Coordinator: Hello, I'm Sara, the volunteer coordinator. Thanks for coming in today. New Volunteer: Hi Sara, I'm Tom. A friend told me about your shelter and I want to help. Volunteer Coordinator: Great. We have several small animals and a raccoon currently in quarantine after being rescued last week. New Volunteer: A raccoon? I've never worked with one before. Is this organisation legit? I saw mixed comments online. Volunteer Coordinator: Yes, we're a legit charity registered with the city. You can check our registration on the council site if you like. New Volunteer: What will my first shift involve? Volunteer Coordinator: Mostly cleaning, basic feeding and simple enrichment tasks. When you feed the raccoon, please wear a bib and gloves for hygiene. New Volunteer: Should I bring a bib or will you provide one? Volunteer Coordinator: We supply the bib at sign-in, and we also give gloves. Still, bring closed shoes and a water bottle. New Volunteer: Do I need to show ID or anything before I start? Volunteer Coordinator: Yes, we ask for ID and a simple background check. It's part of our legit safety procedures. New Volunteer: When are the shifts? Volunteer Coordinator: Main shifts are Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00. We also have some morning training that starts at 9:00 occasionally. New Volunteer: Is the raccoon dangerous? Volunteer Coordinator: It's shy but may bite if startled, so the training and wearing the bib are important for safety. New Volunteer: Okay, that sounds fine. I'll check your registration and see you Saturday. Volunteer Coordinator: Perfect. Remember, the organisation is legit and the bib will be ready when you arrive. Thank you.
