Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Project Manager: Morning, Tom. Thanks for joining the quick review. How are you? Team Lead: Good morning. A bit tired but okay. The launch had some surprises. Project Manager: Yes. In the demo video there was a screamer in the background that startled people. Team Lead: I heard that. There was also a loud boo from a section of the audience when we mentioned pricing. Project Manager: I had to swallow my pride when I saw the clip. It looks worse online than in the room. Team Lead: Same. I checked lookon first for feedback and screenshots. The top comment called the audio a screamer moment. Project Manager: About 120 people attended, and roughly half posted something online. Later, the press kit noted 130 attendees, which is odd. Team Lead: Anyway, we might need to swallow the cost of re-editing the promo. On lookon most users mentioned the abrupt noise and a loud boo. Project Manager: Agreed. We should prepare a short statement and an edited clip. Also, label the problematic cut so editors avoid the screamer in future versions. Team Lead: I'll draft the statement. I don't want management to just lookon without action. They need to see our plan. Project Manager: Good. Let's meet later to approve the edit and the response before the end of day.
