Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Teacher: Good morning. Thanks for coming in to chat about the new life skills club. Parent: Good morning. I heard about it from the newsletter. My son seems interested. Teacher: Great. We meet on Thursday afternoons from three to four thirty. Parent: I thought it was on Wednesday. That was in a note I saw. Teacher: No, it's definitely Thursday. We teach simple cooking, basic hygiene and practical crafts. Parent: You mentioned snacks. What do they usually have? Teacher: Healthy snacks. Often celery sticks with hummus. Celery is crunchy and cheap. Teacher: We also use celery in a little science demo to show how colour moves up plants. Parent: That sounds fun. My wife worries about small cuts and nail care. Teacher: We cover that too. We teach children not to pick at their cuticles. Teacher: Instead, we suggest keeping hands clean and the cuticles moisturized after washing. Parent: Good. About prices — is there a fee? Teacher: Yes. The term price is £45 per child. Parent: I thought it was only £25 when I read the flyer. That surprised me. Teacher: Sorry for any confusion. There is also a small materials charge of £5 per month for supplies. Teacher: So to recap: Thursday, simple cooking with celery snacks, hygiene including cuticles, and the stated prices. Parent: Thanks. That helps. We'll sign him up if the schedule and prices fit.
