Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Dispatcher: Emergency Services, this is central dispatch. What's your emergency and where are you calling from? Neighbour: Hi, I'm calling from 12 Oak Street. I live next door to Mr Lopez. There has been a small tremor in the house and he is shaking. Dispatcher: Okay. Is he awake and breathing? Neighbour: Yes, he is awake but confused. His hands have a constant tremor and he can't hold his cup. Dispatcher: Right. Do you know his age and whether he has any chest pain or bleeding? Neighbour: He's about seventy-eight. No bleeding, no chest pain, and he can breathe normally. Dispatcher: Good. Don't give him anything to eat or drink. Keep him sitting and supported so he doesn't fall. Neighbour: Okay. I've helped him sit. The tremor in the building was small, like a shake. He is still talking but a bit unsteady. Dispatcher: Paramedics are on their way. They should arrive in about eight minutes. Stay with him and talk to him until they get there. Neighbour: Will do. Thanks. Should I move him to the couch now? Dispatcher: No, keep him where he is and support his head. If anything changes call back immediately. Help is coming.
