Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Customs Officer: Good morning. Customs. Do you have anything to declare? Traveller: Yes. I have a small medieval coin I bought at a market. I thought I should declare it. Customs Officer: Thank you. Where did you buy the medieval coin and do you have a receipt? Traveller: I bought it from a stall in the old town. I don't have a formal receipt, only a photo of the seller and the coin. Customs Officer: Right. Sometimes old coins can be archaeological. That means export controls might apply. Traveller: I understand. I'm staying for ten days and I just wanted it as a souvenir. Customs Officer: Can I see the coin? ... Hmm, it looks genuine but we need to log it. Please fill in this declaration form. Traveller: Of course. Will there be a fee? Customs Officer: There may be a small export fee, or we might hold it for further inspection by the heritage office. Either way, complete the paperwork. Traveller: Thanks. I appreciate the help. I don't want any trouble. Customs Officer: No trouble. We just need to be careful with items of historical interest. Please sign here and leave the coin at the desk for inspection.
