Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good morning. This is Greenfield Clinic. Can I have your name and appointment time please? Patient: Hello. I'm James Brown. My appointment is at three o'clock with Dr Lee. Receptionist: Right. James Brown at 3 pm. Please fill in this form in the waiting area. And tell the nurse if you have any allergies. Patient: Sure. By the way, my son has a school project about a stegosaurus and I brought a short list of stegosaurus facts to read while we wait. Receptionist: Oh, that's interesting. Tell him we have a children's leaflet at reception that might include facts and pictures. Patient: That would help. Also, should we sit in the blue chairs? The email said to wait in the blue area, but someone this morning said room four. Receptionist: Sorry for the mix-up. Usually it's the blue chairs and a nurse will call you in about ten minutes, though sometimes it's nearer twenty. Patient: No problem. I just want to make sure my son can show his stegosaurus facts to his teacher on time. Receptionist: Great. Fill the form, tell the nurse about any symptoms, and I will fetch the leaflet. We hope the wait isn't long.
