Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Counselor: Hi there! I'm glad you came in today. How can I assist you with your university application? Student: Thanks! I'm trying to decide between a couple of programs, and I heard I need to start saving early. Counselor: Absolutely. Many students overlook the importance of saving money. Have you thought about how much you might need? Student: I think I’ll need around fifteen thousand for tuition and living expenses. Counselor: That sounds like a good estimate. Also, picking the right program can help save you money in the long run. Student: Yes, I’ve heard some programs have higher costs due to added fees. Counselor: Exactly! Additionally, financial aid could help you manage those costs. But you need to have your applications submitted on time. Student: What if I miss the deadline? That could really crush my plans. Counselor: That would indeed be unfortunate. Make sure you keep track of all the due dates. Student: I’ll do my best! I don't want anything to get crushed just because I missed a date. Counselor: Stay organized, and you should be fine. Do you have any more questions? Student: Not at the moment, but I appreciate your help!
