Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Dispatcher: Emergency services. What's your location and the problem? Farmer: Hi, it's Tom Miller. I live at the old Miller homestead on River Lane. Dispatcher: Can you tell me what's happening at the homestead? Farmer: There's a fire. The barn is on fire and some straw bales are burning fast. Dispatcher: Are there people or animals in danger? Farmer: My neighbour and I tried to help. I even used metal pans to beat at the flames. Dispatcher: Have you moved anyone to safety? Farmer: Yes, my neighbour moved the sheep out. One sheep has a singed pelt, it looks badly scorched. Dispatcher: Is there anything else burning near the house? Farmer: There was straw scattered by the driveway and a stack closer to the fence is smoking. Dispatcher: Did you smell gas or hear an explosion? Farmer: No gas smell. I thought at first it might be fireworks, but then I saw the pans and pots we left outside from yesterday's cooking. Dispatcher: Are any pets hurt? Farmer: My dog is coughing. Its pelt smells of smoke, but it's moving around. Dispatcher: Help is on the way. Stay at a safe distance from the barn and keep people and animals away from the straw.
