Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Property Manager: Good morning. Thanks for coming to view flat 4B. Applicant: Morning. I saw the listing and wanted to check the rules. I produce music and sometimes need to mix the tracks at home. Property Manager: That’s fine, but we do have a noise curfew. Quiet hours are from 10 pm to 7 am. Applicant: I heard someone say 11 pm is allowed. If I mix the tracks I can keep it low or use headphones. Property Manager: Yes. If you mix the tracks please use headphones or insulating equipment to reduce noise. We also offer optional soundproofing for an extra fee. Applicant: Good. What about the deposit and paperwork? Property Manager: We ask for a $500 security deposit. It’s refundable when you leave, assuming no damage. Applicant: And documents? Property Manager: Bring ID and proof of employment. The lease is for 12 months and rent is $900 per month. Applicant: Sounds reasonable. I might need the optional soundproofing, but I’ll bring my ID and employment letter tomorrow.
