Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Trainer: Hello. Good to see you. How are you feeling today? Client: Hi. I feel okay, but I have a peculiar pain in my lower back. Trainer: Peculiar? Can you describe it? Client: It is a sharp, peculiar ache when I bend. Also my legs are tender after the last class. Trainer: I see. Your posture might be the problem. That is a common reason for such pain. Client: I was worried. I have slimmed since I started, but this pain worries me. Trainer: You have slimmed a lot. Well done. A few clients have slimmed with gentle training and stretching. Trainer: For now, be tender with that area. Avoid heavy weights for two weeks. Client: So I should stop all exercise? Trainer: No. Do light cardio and gentle stretches. If it is tender or painful, rest and tell me. Trainer: I recommend three short sessions per week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6 pm are best for this plan. Client: That sounds good. Do you offer any other help? Trainer: Yes. I can give a simple nutrition plan for extra cost. I can also watch your posture next session. Client: Thanks. I will come on Monday. I want to keep going but stay careful with the tender spot.
