Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Museum Guide: Good morning. Welcome to the City Art Museum. Are you here for the modern exhibition or the sculpture tour today? Visitor: Good morning. I'm mainly interested in the modern exhibition, but I may visit the central hall sculptures afterwards. Museum Guide: Excellent. The modern gallery contains 42 works in total, and the central hall holds 12 sculptures. The galleries open at 10 o'clock. Visitor: Right. Is photography allowed inside the galleries? Museum Guide: Yes, you can take photographs without flash in most rooms. If you want high-resolution images for publication, ask at reception and they will arrange permission. Visitor: Where can I find details about the main painting? I need a clear date for my notes. Museum Guide: There is a small plaque to the left of the painting. It gives the artist's name and the year. You can photograph that plaque for your report. Visitor: Who donated the painting originally? Museum Guide: The painting was donated by the Carson family in 1952. There's another plaque near the entrance that explains the donor and recent restoration work. Visitor: Restoration work? Museum Guide: Yes, restoration means careful repair and cleaning. The plaque notes the restoration was completed in 2018. Visitor: Thanks. Any suggestion for a quieter visit? Museum Guide: Afternoons are busiest. Early morning, right after opening, tends to be much quieter.
