Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Today I want to describe a local initiative to tackle pollution along our riverside. The programme began as a small volunteer group and then became a city-led project. Early on we hit a hiccup when funding was delayed. That hiccup meant scheduled water quality tests were postponed for a month. Volunteers noticed the decay of old pipes and riverbanks near the waterfront. The decay had accelerated because of saltwater intrusion and years of neglect. As part of the plan, the council proposed a deluxe restoration option for the most visible stretch. That deluxe plan included attractive boardwalks and new lighting. However, the council also approved a basic repair route for quieter areas. The project aims to add amenities like public toilets and bicycle racks to encourage responsible use. Each amenity will have clear signage and simple maintenance instructions. New amenity installations will be low-maintenance. Staff worked with a courteous team of volunteers. The courteous behaviour of residents helped calm tension when access was restricted. To be clear, the project officially started in 2018 and did not begin with commercial sponsors. Developers later offered some deluxe sponsorships, but these were not accepted. The team overcame a minor hiccup in logistics by rerouting vehicles. Continuous monitoring has shown reduced pollutant levels. By tackling decay and improving amenity access, the city hopes river life will recover and visitors will be more respectful.
