Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coordinator: Hello, thanks for coming in. Are you still able to help this weekend? Volunteer: Yes, I can. Which shift do you need me for? Coordinator: We have a spay clinic on Saturday and we start at nine in the morning this time. Volunteer: Nine is fine. I have some experience holding dogs for procedures. Coordinator: Great. Meet at the shelter house on Maple Street at eight fifty so we can set up. Volunteer: Okay. Should I bring any forms or will you provide them? Coordinator: We will bring most forms, but if you could bring a few consent forms from your house that would help. Volunteer: I can bring them from my house. Do you need me for intake or recovery? Coordinator: Mainly intake and holding dogs after the spay. We also need three more people for cleaning between operations. Volunteer: I can help with intake and the holding area. I used to foster dogs so I'm comfortable. Coordinator: Perfect. As a small incentive we give a 'plum of the day' to whoever brings extra supplies. Volunteer: Plum of the day? Is that a treat or a joke prize? Coordinator: It's a small treat, often something like a fresh plum or a voucher. The plum of the day is more about saying thank you. Volunteer: That sounds nice. I can bring a few pet-safe treats from home as well. Coordinator: Thanks. Remember this clinic is only for spay and neuter cases, not regular vaccinations. Volunteer: Understood. I'll be at the shelter house at eight fifty on Saturday with the forms from my house.
