I work in community outreach for river restoration. Last summer there was a brush fire on the hill near the marsh. Fire crews had to extinguish the flames quickly to protect a nearby wetland. Volunteers also tried to extinguish campfires that were still smouldering after a local festival. The smoke from those blazes created an achromatic haze over the town. The sky looked almost achromatic, as if soot had removed colour from the scene. Such events often portend larger climate shifts, and many residents now see each intense summer storm as something that may portend future flooding.
