I want to describe a visit to a small local gallery I went to last month. It was a bright afternoon. The show focused on contemporary sketches and small sculptures. One piece that stopped me was a biting caricature of a city official. The caricature exaggerated features in a way that made the subject oddly human. It made me laugh, but it also felt unkind. The figure in the drawing looked slothful. His slothful expression suggested complacency more than cruelty. Behind him the canvas was mottled with brown and green. That mottled background gave the scene depth and suggested years of neglect. Nearby a tiny sculpture included a piece of flint embedded in clay. The flint was literal and rough. The artist also used flint as a metaphor for a hard, stubborn temperament in an accompanying note. I thought the show revealed the artist's dalliance with satire. The word dalliance seemed right because the work played with ideas without fully committing to a single style. I admit my own dalliance was obvious. I lingered, considered buying a print, then left without committing. There were a few irrelevant displays about nature too, which I only glanced at.
