I'm going to describe a recent urban redevelopment project on the old riverside dock. The city plans three mixed-use towers and a large public park. Construction began last spring. The site currently has two tower cranes and one mobile crane for heavy lifts. The cranes are used to place structural steel and to lift salvaged beams. The cranes also remove old piers and misplaced concrete. Work was briefly paused after a small accident. A worker became trapped on scaffolding and a crane was used to lower him safely in a rescue operation. The emergency rescue was quick and praised by the council. Rescue teams train regularly on site to improve response times. Seasonal melt also affects the site. Rapid snowmelt in early spring flooded temporary roads and delayed deliveries. The team is also worried about deeper permafrost melt further upstream. That melting can cause foundations to shift over time and increase repair costs. Planners want the park to act as a sponge. It will absorb runoff and reduce flood risk. Meltwater channels will be integrated into the landscape design. They hope the green space will make the neighbourhood more resilient to extreme weather. Local shops and families should benefit. The project is funded by a mix of municipal grants and private investment. There is talk, possibly incorrect, that construction began in 2019. Some consultants even mentioned a budget of $120 million, though final numbers are still being negotiated.
