Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coach: Hi, good morning. I am the coach. How are you today? Member: I am fine, thanks. I just joined and I want to learn about classes. Coach: Great. We run a fitness class on Monday and Thursday at six o'clock. We also have a short session on Saturday, but the main classes are Monday and Thursday. Member: Okay. I heard the class has a relaxed vibe. I like the insouciance of a calm group. Coach: Yes, some members enjoy that insouciance. But please do not meddle with other people's weights or equipment. Member: I won't meddle. I prefer to keep my own routine. Coach: One time a woman had a tirade about loud music. She shouted for a long time and then left. Member: I heard that tirade. It made some people nervous. Coach: Also, some of our posters look a bit twee, with small bright drawings. The design is cute, maybe too twee for some members. Member: Yes, I think the logo is a little twee. It does not feel serious. Coach: We check the applicability of exercises to each person's goals. We test the applicability before we change a plan. Member: That is good. I want to know if a program fits my strength goals. Coach: Good. Remember, do not meddle, ask if you are unsure, and enjoy the relaxed insouciance of the group.
