Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Project Manager: Morning. Glad you could make time. Quick catch-up on the park jobs. Field Technician: Morning. No problem. I brought the notes from last week. Project Manager: First, the community garden. We need to start seedlings in the greenhouse next Tuesday. Field Technician: Right. Starting seedlings early gives us a head start before the unpredictable April nights. Project Manager: Exactly. Also volunteers must attach the hose to the raised beds after we transplant. Field Technician: I can organise that. I said I would bring the hand tools and a cart. I will also bring a spade. Project Manager: Good. Remind people to attach the hose properly so we don't waste water. Field Technician: Will do. I arranged four volunteers for Tuesday, though one might be late. Project Manager: Fine. Now the rink. We need to take down the boards and clear the ice surface by Friday. Field Technician: The rink has been busy this season. Dismantling will need a couple of extra hands. Project Manager: Yes. Once the rink is cleared we can store the boards and use the space for a spring market next month. Field Technician: Okay. I can call the weekend crew to pitch in. They can also help move the remaining seedlings outdoors when weather allows. Project Manager: Perfect. Quick note: the toolkit stays in the shed by the rink door. Any issues, email me. Field Technician: Got it. I'll confirm volunteers and send the schedule. See you at the site on Tuesday.
