Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Project Manager: Morning. Glad you could make it. Coffee first, then the agenda? Field Researcher: Thanks. I skimmed your memo about the archipelago clinics on the ferry. Project Manager: Good. The archipelago covers many small islands. Access is tricky. Field Researcher: The memo says there is a shortage of cardiologists in several islands. Project Manager: Yes. We need a visiting cardiologist for basic screening. I can ask the hospital. Field Researcher: On my last trip a cardiologist warned that recent budget cuts constrict available services. Project Manager: Exactly. New rules seem to constrict outreach, which limits what we can offer. Field Researcher: Also, that polemical article last month upset local partners. Project Manager: I read it. The polemical tone made people defensive and less willing to cooperate. Field Researcher: Because of that, I think we should start afresh with a neutral briefing for communities. Project Manager: Agreed. If we approach afresh we can rebuild trust and show we listen. Field Researcher: I'll contact a cardiologist advisor in the capital and organise transport. Project Manager: Good. We'll survey clinics across the archipelago next month and test ideas afresh. Field Researcher: One more thing: another polemical opinion piece appeared online yesterday. It doesn't help.
