Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coordinator: Hi, thanks for coming. The community center is a little busy today, but it should be fine. Volunteer: No problem. I signed up for the bake sale shift at nine am on Saturday. Coordinator: Great. We have about 15 volunteers signed up. Some people last year said the event felt like hustling for money, but we try to keep it friendly. Volunteer: I get that. I want to go on a diet, so it'll be hard not to eat the cookies I make. Coordinator: If you want, pack a healthy lunch. I know it is tempting, and I also have to apply eyeliner quickly before we start to look presentable for photos. Volunteer: Ha, I wont complain about that. I can sell the cookies and handle the money box. I dont want to be hustling for money on the street, though; I prefer polite asking. Coordinator: Perfect. Others will hand out leaflets and run a small raffle. By the way, bring comfortable shoes and dont forget to go on a diet plan if it helps you stick to healthy choices. Volunteer: Okay. And you really need to apply eyeliner in the car if youre short on time? I remember last event someone did that. Coordinator: Yes, I sometimes apply eyeliner in the van. See you Saturday at nine at the community center entrance.
