Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Project Manager: Morning. Thanks for coming. I wanted a quick check on the launch details. Senior Designer: Good morning. Sure. I sketched concepts. The main theme should be about vibrancy, very colourful and energetic. Project Manager: I agree on vibrancy. Let’s push bold primaries, reds and oranges. That vibrancy will lift the foyer. Senior Designer: Right. For music, I thought the company anthem could be sung by the internal team rather than a recording. Project Manager: Yes, the anthem performed live feels warmer. We should keep the anthem short though, under two minutes. Senior Designer: On imagery, I noticed an old poster with an occult symbol. We must avoid anything that hints at the occult. Project Manager: Absolutely. We don't want to displease any staff or visitors by including controversial symbols. Senior Designer: I called two decorators for a quotation. DecorCo quoted 1,400 pounds and BrightRooms quoted 1,200 pounds. Project Manager: Good. Ask finance to confirm the final quotation and deadline for payment. Senior Designer: Also, someone suggested a retro theme earlier, but that felt slightly occult in style; we should stick with the vibrant look. Project Manager: I don't want to displease the client by changing direction at the last minute. Bold primaries it is. Senior Designer: Perfect. I'll brief the choir and the decorators, and I'll request a revised quotation from BrightRooms to include installation. Project Manager: Thanks. Make sure the anthem rehearsal is scheduled, and confirm that all decorative motifs show only positivity and vibrancy.
