I’m here for a tech conference in Silicon Valley, and I work with silicon wafers, so it's both business and research. Immigration Officer: I see. Was your trip arranged under the auspices of your employer or did you apply independently? Passenger: It was arranged by my company. They approved it to manage absenteeism at the office, so my leave is covered. Immigration Officer: Do you have any food items to declare? Our detection dogs are trained to pick up carrion and other restricted meat products. Passenger: No meat. I packed snacks, but nothing that would be considered carrion. It was fortuitous that I checked labels before packing. Immigration Officer: Any electronic samples? You mentioned research—do you carry any chips or components? Passenger: Yes, a small prototype with silicon chips. It’s just one carry-on and a backpack with brochures and two small gifts for colleagues. Immigration Officer: Good. You said it was fortuitous you received the invitation. Do you mean it was unexpected? Passenger: Exactly. A colleague called last week and, fortuitously, I could get time off. My manager is strict about absenteeism, so getting approval felt lucky. Immigration Officer: Alright. Everything seems in order. The dogs at arrivals are especially alert to carrion, so please keep food sealed. Enjoy the conference in Silicon Valley.
